I was quite taken aback, when I looked at this blog, to see that my last post was June last year. That was a bit of a shock, I can tell you! I've been working away on this in between playing with another property so it seems as if I should have more to show you all.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Work started on a Bathroom in the roof space. Not really historically correct for the time - 1850 - but I do like having a bathroom in my properties and as there are three spaces in the roof to be dealt with, why not?</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is what there is to work with in the roof space. The Bathroom is on the left, Upper Hall in the centre and something else on the right - no idea what yet. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHJZuOTj5WLt6z8zDmIrp4hV4wHCtx1cDxAXyxhyAzqpBXVebE7onv77n5U1kkhl8ChnEO8O8dpNWN-7rmn6lrxWraH1FqgpkuAW2TdDmcJa33ivqoGDMG0a40AyboT1g-3Fji2y_pnS4/s1600/100_4283+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHJZuOTj5WLt6z8zDmIrp4hV4wHCtx1cDxAXyxhyAzqpBXVebE7onv77n5U1kkhl8ChnEO8O8dpNWN-7rmn6lrxWraH1FqgpkuAW2TdDmcJa33ivqoGDMG0a40AyboT1g-3Fji2y_pnS4/s320/100_4283+%25281%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Work started in the bathroom by adding a false wall at the back to take a cabinet and leave a recess for the loo. Annoyingly, I didn't take any pictures at the start. The cabinet was a barewood piece that has been painted and varnished, shelves lined and trimmed and lace added to the inner door. The loo was a piece I already had.</div>

Maddeningly, I got as far as working on the door when it dawned on me I couldn't get any further with the Bathroom until the Hall had been completed, purely by the order of jobs to be done so that was left aside and wall panelling was ordered. I had also completely forgotten that I wouldn't be able to route the wiring through the back because my false wall was already fixed in place so it had to go out via the Hall before the toilet was installed.</div>

I've called it the Upper Hall (purely because I couldn't think of anything else) and it's quite a sparse little space. The Hall chairs and candle holders are again kits by Arjen Spinhoven.</div>

Hello followers! I know it's been some time since I last posted an updated on this property and Miniatura and the York Fair have come and gone but I was able to attend both fairs and managed to collect quite a few accessories for all three properties on the go at the moment.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I can at last show you the completed Bedroom. (Some photos have to be taken with the flash as the room is situated behind a pull-out section and that blocks any natural light).</div>

was a faculty psychology, theory of brain and science of character reading, what the nineteenth century phrenologists called "the only true science of mind". Phrenology was derived from the theories of the idiosyncratic Viennese physician Franz Joseph Gall (1758 - 1828).</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For some time now I've been searching for a Phrenology head. I decided that the Master of Marsh Hall, being an educated Victorian individual, was keen on the study of Phrenology so of course he had to have a head. This proved really tricky but I eventually got one made (in fact the maker gave me two - adult and baby), tracked down some images and added the relevant lines so I can now place them in the Snuggery along with the poster I already had.</div>

Thank you for your lovely comments regarding my last post. The Bedroom hasn't moved forward at all since then and now, with only a week to go, I'm holding off buying anything or doing anything to it until after my trip to Miniatura next weekend where I'm hoping to find lots of lovely minis and accessories.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So, until then, I thought I'd better do something with my very swanky sofa in the Parlour. This sofa has been sitting there in it's naked state since I last posted about that particular room. It's a John Hodgson piece (in the raw) and I was so chuffed at having found it. It's signed on the bottom and everything!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Using Crafter's Acrylic paint I gave the body of the sofa three coats of green and the wooden framework received two coats of mahogany. A touch of gold on the castors and it was job done.</div>

I've just done a very silly thing - prepared this post, added photos and posted it all to the wrong blog! That's what happens when I don't pay attention. All sorted out now and I can go ahead and show you the stage I'm at with the Bedroom. I'll give more detail on where I bought what once all the accessories are in place.<br />
<br />

As you can see below, there is a decorative ceiling rose. I decided that something had to be added to that space but there isn't enough room to include the drop of a light fitting. It wouldn't be unusual to have no form of lighting there and I like to think it has given the room some atmosphere.</div>

Work is progressing on the Marsh Hall bedroom and to date (and to let you know I haven't forgotten about this property) I have just completed dressing a four poster bed.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;">
I had bought it for another property but unfortunately, given the size of the room I was working on at the time, it was too wide so I replaced it with a single bed of the same design leaving me with this one which worked out really well as I think it's ideal for Marsh Hall.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;">
In my head, Marsh Hall is a baronial property situated in the Highlands of Scotland round about 1850. High fashion didn't reach the Highlands for quite some time so what may have been cutting edge design in 1850 London (or even Edinburgh) wasn't seen for a while (if at all, even for low gentry) unless of course there was plenty money to hand or you were Queen Victoria and living at Balmoral. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;">
The style it has been dressed in is pretty plain with no unnecessary cushions or frills. That wasn't the Scottish way (although it was tempting to add a couple of cushions - I remained firm!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;">
So, and while I carry on decorating the main room, here is my Baronial bed.</div>

I know it's been a little while since I last posted here but I have been busy - mini busy. The only task left to do in the Parlour of Marsh Hall is to paint the sofa and I'll let you see that when it's done.</div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV6GQf4_458TMz7pzM01QqiQ6XmikKfgkhlJi98wUv94gB8iRi_w8KnwkLQKsEVbbBACG3Xkze9kyM_O4makaSjDN5-R28DwPXina7ehiG-s4815ck6nHqalCr3PTz3mC_9DOSkWm87Kc/s1600/Fabric+and+paint.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><b></b><i></i><u></u><strike></strike><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've been working on The Oak Gallery. A small space measuring 5.5" (13.91 cms) wide by 16" (40.64 cms) deep by 9" (22.86 cms) high. Firstly, a colour scheme had to be chosen:- </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV6GQf4_458TMz7pzM01QqiQ6XmikKfgkhlJi98wUv94gB8iRi_w8KnwkLQKsEVbbBACG3Xkze9kyM_O4makaSjDN5-R28DwPXina7ehiG-s4815ck6nHqalCr3PTz3mC_9DOSkWm87Kc/s1600/Fabric+and+paint.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: transparent; color: #0066cc; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; orphans: 2; text-align: center; text-decoration: underline; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV6GQf4_458TMz7pzM01QqiQ6XmikKfgkhlJi98wUv94gB8iRi_w8KnwkLQKsEVbbBACG3Xkze9kyM_O4makaSjDN5-R28DwPXina7ehiG-s4815ck6nHqalCr3PTz3mC_9DOSkWm87Kc/s320/Fabric+and+paint.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Paint and fabric to the right were selected and work got started. As I had already taken the decision to remove all staircases from this build, the impression had to be given that there was some form of access to the upper floors and so a door at the end of the Hall was installed, with very worn stone steps.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I don't know why but I have a real struggle finding suitable rugs. There are loads out there but I never seem to come across the right one when I'm looking for it so the search continues for something that will do the job in The Parlour.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Quite a lot has happened in this room since my last photo and I feel the room is now starting to take shape. Still lots to add - the dresser needs filling as does the what-not and there are still other little items to find for the desk.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm not sure if I like the circular table and was thinking of changing it to a square one but I'll think about that. The sofa to the left needs painting. It's a John Hodgson piece and I was thrilled to find it at a York Fair some time ago. I almost snatched it off their table!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The door isn't fixed in place yet as I can't do that until I've added the wall covering to the hallway on the other side and there's an pediment to go in place once that happens. More stuff has to be added to the mantel as well.</div>
<br />

Happy New Year, followers!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Progress has been slow on this project since my last post (but I'm assuming it's the same for everyone given the time of year - so much to do!).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Just one picture for you today as I thought I'd better get something up here before you forget all about me! This is The Parlour and I'm hoping to get it looking as High Victorian as I can - filled with stuff. Furniture placement has been an issue and every time I looked at it, I moved things around but hopefully I've cracked it now and with the purchase of more "stuff" I'll have more detailed pics to show you soon.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzrt-f_GFOBg3JFLev4ARXQ8vqtrOQy0J9vkoeD9zrVrnph3Mv841JdiILzWA1aPQPLbc8xP25MpRf3tUuFJuxRWtDbXs6RIUP4_9sB8SW2fb9iktWC64cf_jzI_s6WOwhaJUmpnyhOBQ/s1600/Parlour+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1244" data-original-width="1374" height="289" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzrt-f_GFOBg3JFLev4ARXQ8vqtrOQy0J9vkoeD9zrVrnph3Mv841JdiILzWA1aPQPLbc8xP25MpRf3tUuFJuxRWtDbXs6RIUP4_9sB8SW2fb9iktWC64cf_jzI_s6WOwhaJUmpnyhOBQ/s320/Parlour+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There is another reason for the delay (she said in a whispery voice!). I have a new property. Yes, you read it correctly, so that has been a bit of a distraction for me. There are no pics yet and no new blog but I can tell you that it is called The Silkweaver's House. More later.</div>

Thank you all for your encouraging comments to my "Sitootery" post. I'm so pleased you like what I'm doing with this.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I seem to have been on a roll with alternative names for the rooms I'm creating and this next one is no different. I came across the word "Snuggery" and thought it was such a good one, I just had to use it. It's really just a 19th century man cave but sounds so much better!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, let's go to The Snuggery -</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This little room is situated in the swing out section of the property and sits directly above The Sitootery and has the same dimensions - 11" (27.94cms) wide by 6" (15.24cms) deep. All the electrics for this and the other two spaces have to be done by battery. I ran the wires across the floor and up the left side of the door, through the ceiling and onto a battery pack which will be disguised as a trunk (or something) in the top space.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAmbrNpkOtfyyRNpKPMJoL4grkNkW9OTkMABKl57gvomu0I30sMpgvqA2RiZskZOLeiZfn52GdJ_bfzvbynGqV1dw7dMQwqphvta1d_8rRhQJmqdWqyJ94tQnClsstuGT9_g9iYshT_J8/s1600/Front+extension.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="919" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAmbrNpkOtfyyRNpKPMJoL4grkNkW9OTkMABKl57gvomu0I30sMpgvqA2RiZskZOLeiZfn52GdJ_bfzvbynGqV1dw7dMQwqphvta1d_8rRhQJmqdWqyJ94tQnClsstuGT9_g9iYshT_J8/s320/Front+extension.jpg" width="183" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I ended up not using the electrified candlestick as the base was too large for the "shelf" which is a combined dado and display area as I wanted to get as much out of this space as possible. It's actually a deep cornice using the widest part for "stuff".</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I had been itching to get on with decorating this room as I knew well in advance where I would be going with it especially once I'd bought the fake bookcase. This came from <a href="http://miniaturescene.com/">The Miniature Scene, York</a>. I knew exactly what I was going to do with this. The door can now double as a bookcase - again letting me make as much use of the space as I could.</div>

<br />
The painting of Rabbie Burns is actually a magnet purchased from the National Gallery of Scotland and is copied from a painting by Alexander Nasmyth (Scottish portrait and landscape painter 1758 - 1846).<br />

They're all very encouraging.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It took me a while to actually figure out how I was going to use the space and at the same time get in all the items I wanted but it's finished now (apart from any additional bits I intend picking up from fairs) and I hope I've done the space justice.</div>
<br />
I got rid of the planters on either side of the door, shown in the previous post, they were too bulky.<br />
<br />

The fountain was my first venture into the world of Scenic Water and I hope I haven't made it look as though the lion is throwing up!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
There wasn't enough trim to go straight across the full width of the back wall so I had to create a something that would fill the space. I <b>think</b> this works.</div>
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Not sure if the figures above the door will stay but they're fine for the time being. There's a good chance I'll find something perhaps more suitable at the York fair in November.</div>

Firstly, many thanks for your lovely comments on my previous post, they are very much appreciated. You can probably tell, I'm having a lot of fun with this house.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The one thing that attracted me to this property was the swing out portion. It presented lots of possibilities and was something a little different from the usual flat fronted houses available.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFSMnpQBRwAWQslrjpI55ChAUDDMEHdeHv1oGTlRHUdNGCu2l1p5XsCSi-XvceD7-2Mwm2jeJj1mVD32HUVwKy5kdiqAN4Sk_3Xrt7FkGXcHE3H4kEnsvXtjdblXFGnrAoz0_QF-zYN3o/s1600/MH10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFSMnpQBRwAWQslrjpI55ChAUDDMEHdeHv1oGTlRHUdNGCu2l1p5XsCSi-XvceD7-2Mwm2jeJj1mVD32HUVwKy5kdiqAN4Sk_3Xrt7FkGXcHE3H4kEnsvXtjdblXFGnrAoz0_QF-zYN3o/s320/MH10.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The section on the right swings out from the main building giving me three smallish rooms to play with.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first to be tackled is the space on the Ground Floor accessed via the Dining Room.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh4lmmUcESuiSPbNIDp_aUSXumaBOrM-W4Ml-Mr3ZzPJWCzwi5pgLAamdmgkb9VDpic-ytpuOqiWD8P2_E80gjmj884Oa0iHWpAOQC2FN4MWPY5HOggtMVYyZ2QoiL-iRjBsHwHEpL1HY/s1600/House+w+doors+3a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh4lmmUcESuiSPbNIDp_aUSXumaBOrM-W4Ml-Mr3ZzPJWCzwi5pgLAamdmgkb9VDpic-ytpuOqiWD8P2_E80gjmj884Oa0iHWpAOQC2FN4MWPY5HOggtMVYyZ2QoiL-iRjBsHwHEpL1HY/s320/House+w+doors+3a.jpg" width="235" /></a></div>

<div align="justify">
This space is going to be The Garden Room or (as I prefer to call it) The Sitootery.*</div>

It's just a small space measuring 11" wide (27.94cms) by 9.5" (24.13cms) by 6" (15.24cms) deep. I haven't got very far with it yet but there's paper on the walls, tiles on the floor and a decorative cornice. I had to juggle that about a bit as I only had two strips and was determined to make it fit without the need of ordering more. So, this is what it looks like so far - </div>
<div align="justify">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The table has a wirework top so the card is there to make fitting a cloth much easier. I'm still at the playing stage so not sure if the planters will stay.</div>

It's been a wee while since I last posted any progress on the work I'm doing with this property but at last I can show you what I've been up to. Neither room is completely finished. I've still to add all the little accessories that hopefully will bring them to life but all the decorating has been done.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In some instances I have had to use the flash as very little daylight gets to the Great Hall. The pictures have also shown up little things that need attending to and improving - which is no bad thing!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Firstly, the Great Hall</div>

I've been on such a roll with this property (sadly to the exclusion of my other one <a href="http://smallandstately.blogspot.co.uk/">Netherton</a>) that I just had to get to a point where it was ok to let it sit for a while and proceed with my other project.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For a while now I've felt as though any mini-ing I have done has been more by way of buying than actually doing. I can never decide whether it's better to decorate all the rooms of a property then fill them gradually or decorate and fill before moving on to the next room so with that in mind, what I do have to show you is a decorated space. I have some of the furnishings but not all. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is The Great Hall - it would have been used to greet/entertain visitors who were not so well known or not important enough to be taken to the private rooms upstairs.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYp3jra5_oaAgsZerwoQhCVCP5r4oInLIFfGRzCzx0uw7XWWH2oUhduTzVnVbWguOhDINQx8WmaaSQ4la0jY18uELQc8lt7JBmQx4q8Iq5rM79Hg65vqORBBF5QxJKV_JylNol9r327dI/s1600/GH5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="169" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYp3jra5_oaAgsZerwoQhCVCP5r4oInLIFfGRzCzx0uw7XWWH2oUhduTzVnVbWguOhDINQx8WmaaSQ4la0jY18uELQc8lt7JBmQx4q8Iq5rM79Hg65vqORBBF5QxJKV_JylNol9r327dI/s320/GH5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
It's a difficult space to photograph due to the additional swing-out part of the building to the right which blocks out any natural light so I had to use a lamp.<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The piano was a basic bare wood affair to which I have added carved panels and lighting. (I have also just noticed that it lacks pedals! These were removed because they looked too clunky and will be replaced).</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The area in the corner below gives the impression of access to other areas. I've deliberately left out a kitchen in this property as I've done three already and wanted to use the spaces for other things so we can imagine the stairs leading to the services located elsewhere.</div>

The door to the right leads to the Dining Room. The little Coats of Arms were taken from a postcard and mounted on varnished panels.<br />

I bought a fire surround, logs and dogs but, silly me, the logs were too wide for the fireplace opening. I therefore had to resort to Plan B - make one.<br />
<br />
Using the dimensions of the purchased fireplace but making the opening wider and then diving into my stash of foamboard I came up with this<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYgheqTNnsw9pIPIs9GDixIVA6smjB1K52KqH2BzBf63UWnLcxaAmDVcl-iO4bTcxIsKp_JbnmRn4pbKzltypPRn8LgAu3MJbkAoM_SCahT1_eEePSZcpGwuyU_zTQlb6gmJck9eWJzpM/s1600/Fireplace+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYgheqTNnsw9pIPIs9GDixIVA6smjB1K52KqH2BzBf63UWnLcxaAmDVcl-iO4bTcxIsKp_JbnmRn4pbKzltypPRn8LgAu3MJbkAoM_SCahT1_eEePSZcpGwuyU_zTQlb6gmJck9eWJzpM/s320/Fireplace+1.jpg" width="223" /></a></div>
<br />
Three coats of paint and two coats of dark oak varnish later, I had this<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgePgWVpGO1ZZQBYPygK3drH6RZlIHoxmFDIT3IbuPC4Fl86t-12zr0WZBbsndnkVVT9LZkah3VBZmrTHKmYosvKvi1LdZ09sOSAyvT8rxdnOh6p6buUPhG1i8HsYpxKwN9r2VpepGS-WQ/s1600/Fireplace+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgePgWVpGO1ZZQBYPygK3drH6RZlIHoxmFDIT3IbuPC4Fl86t-12zr0WZBbsndnkVVT9LZkah3VBZmrTHKmYosvKvi1LdZ09sOSAyvT8rxdnOh6p6buUPhG1i8HsYpxKwN9r2VpepGS-WQ/s320/Fireplace+2.jpg" width="223" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Hopefully, once it's in place, it'll look suitably Baronial. <br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm not sure yet whether this selection would work better in Marsh Hall or <a href="http://smallandstately.blogspot.co.uk/">Netherton</a> so I've posted it on both blogs! The fire surrounds are from <a href="http://eggersdelight.com/">Eggers Delight</a> and the chairs from <a href="http://www.alisondaviesminiatures.co.uk/">Alison Davies Miniatures</a>.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There were one or two sellers I had hoped to see who were not there which was a bit of a disappointment and there were quite a few items on my carefully crafted list that I didn't get, but I did however manage to make up for that by purchasing items that weren't on the list and some I hadn't even thought of so all in all, a good weekend. </div>

This is <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauriston_Castle">Lauriston Castle, Edinburgh</a> and the building I'm taking as visual inspiration for Marsh Hall.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm using a <a href="http://www.craft-products.com/stone-stencils.asp">Bromley Crafts</a> stencil and compound for the finish and this is how it looked once dry but before any paint was applied.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<u>Day 1 </u><br />
<br />
The house had already received an undercoat of watered down muddy brown emulsion,<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3kGuf4qJB9XgukHaS8R9ifgWSPjN66-sFTJTFFNJ_ojSL4sfmHUn6oFZNmhjCNv0DQ__n6_xJotLRbwDU7blRmMTydxcX_JJ_eCi3CoNH6TyWhpTEWQ1SqQR7lobsGRD6xMLhY21X8Yk/s1600/House+w+doors.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3kGuf4qJB9XgukHaS8R9ifgWSPjN66-sFTJTFFNJ_ojSL4sfmHUn6oFZNmhjCNv0DQ__n6_xJotLRbwDU7blRmMTydxcX_JJ_eCi3CoNH6TyWhpTEWQ1SqQR7lobsGRD6xMLhY21X8Yk/s320/House+w+doors.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
then, using various "stone" colours I dotted and dabbed with sponges and brushes until I got an effect I was happy with. This is the sort of finish you could fiddle about with for days/weeks and perhaps never be 100% happy with so you have to tell yourself it's fine and put the brushes down otherwise you could go on forever </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioc-JMNE-2lKJeQ947YcLkOIzAA5E3EH-eh35V8bpAnb6i6RbAFQeJpVhztWCKCfWUxHFLQL6WaSz3vtYJHlb049Ddw-phaQjjM-leDjBmrfmBWp-X578sGhFTF9p2qJ8arey4gkfJpoo/s1600/Stoning+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioc-JMNE-2lKJeQ947YcLkOIzAA5E3EH-eh35V8bpAnb6i6RbAFQeJpVhztWCKCfWUxHFLQL6WaSz3vtYJHlb049Ddw-phaQjjM-leDjBmrfmBWp-X578sGhFTF9p2qJ8arey4gkfJpoo/s320/Stoning+1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Part way through the process I decided I didn't want the window surrounds or stonework around the Porch to have a different finish/colour from the main house. <br />
<br />
I felt quite "arty" holding the inspirational postcard in one hand and dabbing away with the brush in the other, standing back to check the effect then moving in with another splodge!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMci0_Xxo9B5g-eaMtQaAUKt_uuOnIqC4O3odAvuYUtGYLLojNbnpaIVJG6dc1tGEAn0ET8925CmKBbpJuEHMU2WfMmP5mXxfDW17IKqMyKlMKZlBKl9HFaCYGwhMgXxd4deus7zgTm3g/s1600/Stoning+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMci0_Xxo9B5g-eaMtQaAUKt_uuOnIqC4O3odAvuYUtGYLLojNbnpaIVJG6dc1tGEAn0ET8925CmKBbpJuEHMU2WfMmP5mXxfDW17IKqMyKlMKZlBKl9HFaCYGwhMgXxd4deus7zgTm3g/s320/Stoning+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaNnq4rH9ZgIfEEx1EM0rB3O2xoJDYYTwH6zyTzG9I0FWm8-2s7vpAn3CT-rVW9mYstCk1Sy6FiE5-lU_aw7HNL0XkLGg4e6S0BoyqQfBbVSNK_QzPhriMyNsSKsC5cTqEYycbvlw8MZs/s1600/Stoning+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaNnq4rH9ZgIfEEx1EM0rB3O2xoJDYYTwH6zyTzG9I0FWm8-2s7vpAn3CT-rVW9mYstCk1Sy6FiE5-lU_aw7HNL0XkLGg4e6S0BoyqQfBbVSNK_QzPhriMyNsSKsC5cTqEYycbvlw8MZs/s320/Stoning+3.jpg" width="189" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As the house will be viewed directly from the front there isn't any special finish at the back, just plain emulsion. The left hand side wont really be seen either given where the house is situated in the hobby room but the right hand side is more on view and also, because there is an additional section of house on this side, I decided to give the building a Clock Tower. The table the Hall is on at the moment is 3' wide, the house is just short of that and the overall space available is just over the 3' mark therefore a full height tower was out of the question as it would overhang the surface so this little add-on was created to give a bit of interest and to take the 'blank wall' look away. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCmzHh-nqAIOje6cLldMRreUCfxNExUsuzSyTwDHUQcVo0reNm5Mk82lv3CuWZtuut5vIwdBQ4boc5vG4Q5dPKI-AGrlKM4cj2-QxHxmoYzafDminW265_OHnWavqXa7MqIgLtZtLkvX4/s1600/Stoning+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCmzHh-nqAIOje6cLldMRreUCfxNExUsuzSyTwDHUQcVo0reNm5Mk82lv3CuWZtuut5vIwdBQ4boc5vG4Q5dPKI-AGrlKM4cj2-QxHxmoYzafDminW265_OHnWavqXa7MqIgLtZtLkvX4/s320/Stoning+5.jpg" width="220" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSGtyEJ7miaoKHrDzeKNrV0HUS-j9I1BDEn1gS05hFOQgRGyrvIOawUdCrib0_3kMsbqcYyxEBeNgaKJDZUyXOtF27HOnKzb9vkWTzITiYL-5INyVodQemF-V875vxEYiXMTT9nKjr9mU/s1600/Stoning+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSGtyEJ7miaoKHrDzeKNrV0HUS-j9I1BDEn1gS05hFOQgRGyrvIOawUdCrib0_3kMsbqcYyxEBeNgaKJDZUyXOtF27HOnKzb9vkWTzITiYL-5INyVodQemF-V875vxEYiXMTT9nKjr9mU/s320/Stoning+4.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The finish you see is untreated emulsion paint. I've definitely stopped dotting and dabbing at it (for now, anyway) and the next thing to do is spray it with matt varnish to seal it all. I'm working on the chimneys at the moment then the Porch will be fixed and it's on to the windows.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<u>Day 2 </u></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Following on from yesterday's efforts I decided, after seeing the gray gables and quoins in the cold light of day, that they appeared to me to look too much like a framework round the building so I had another go with the dabbing and dry brushing to tone them down.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH-lbIPz-toQ3HegLHjV44Q1vv7oI1H2KQZD-fKtro2UhGrMu2JFl8Ziyb2j7eKhbqEh8VBNvg9Bovr_zHdtfZh8M8Dy5lkK8s_wjVRksgFojwyrSUpQjqk3n8aBxLJz-NV8MjLr0On2o/s1600/Stoning+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH-lbIPz-toQ3HegLHjV44Q1vv7oI1H2KQZD-fKtro2UhGrMu2JFl8Ziyb2j7eKhbqEh8VBNvg9Bovr_zHdtfZh8M8Dy5lkK8s_wjVRksgFojwyrSUpQjqk3n8aBxLJz-NV8MjLr0On2o/s320/Stoning+6.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm happier with that, it doesn't look boxed in as much.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip6G5nAlSpv0sY5QS9vj9C8rexBRnZ8Vb6VnSP4LW6TanzVNYMgRqfbME4I5gOJpLVjUda_IMeVooLjX4iKLQPysfnkhiaH-iUGlF4GpQBqpHPum5Nlcah0J83iL99fSI0x9mZW-p78hE/s1600/Stoning+9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip6G5nAlSpv0sY5QS9vj9C8rexBRnZ8Vb6VnSP4LW6TanzVNYMgRqfbME4I5gOJpLVjUda_IMeVooLjX4iKLQPysfnkhiaH-iUGlF4GpQBqpHPum5Nlcah0J83iL99fSI0x9mZW-p78hE/s320/Stoning+9.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The chimneys got some stone/dry brushing treatment and I think I'm finally ready to apply two coats of matt varnish to seal it all.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My final "stoning" task of the day was to add gravel to the top of the porch and paving slabs to the base. I'm pleased with this.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVND6XGcuyFmE-1EewrMp_B5kZX4zyf9nmyxw5kxdsCBTRBfS-4ykKLr6rjb8NQ5hR8KS8ciEuGIGnaK7b-kF-KPeQA0Qez1oH_4IvR1UX83PPmI-GGI3ZpyvlqdeiSnUnz6qCSoc2nOU/s1600/Stoning+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVND6XGcuyFmE-1EewrMp_B5kZX4zyf9nmyxw5kxdsCBTRBfS-4ykKLr6rjb8NQ5hR8KS8ciEuGIGnaK7b-kF-KPeQA0Qez1oH_4IvR1UX83PPmI-GGI3ZpyvlqdeiSnUnz6qCSoc2nOU/s320/Stoning+7.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

This is the property as it stands at the moment. There are still one or two tweaks to be made and I've had a further couple of ideas relating to the front but these can wait. <br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've no idea how many square inches it covers and I haven't even bothered to work it out. I've been debating with myself as to what sort of tile I want.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I knew it wouldn't have a painted finish because the body of the building will be painted. I also considered the mdf strips but that would mean painting them. Real slate was out of the question because of the weight and besides, I'd already used them on <a href="http://the-tenement.blogspot.co.uk/">The Tenement</a><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_K543WDLhLZIYrup9FAjCVmIwfLSdBwd6c97O2AaHoTdsbaVZFPNM-7DfriCxzZR5j510Dwx5jmimxBZlVejFzSr1f4UI7RJp1hUAzxhvLxLmPXTSnvp34mTRZSYtDcmL5FQeBVEenGs/s1600/Roof.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_K543WDLhLZIYrup9FAjCVmIwfLSdBwd6c97O2AaHoTdsbaVZFPNM-7DfriCxzZR5j510Dwx5jmimxBZlVejFzSr1f4UI7RJp1hUAzxhvLxLmPXTSnvp34mTRZSYtDcmL5FQeBVEenGs/s320/Roof.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Richard Stacey's <a href="http://www.richardstacey.com/versirf.html#slates">Versi slates</a> were an option and I'd heard good things about them but they would look too uniform on my building. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I also thought about <a href="http://allthingssmall.webs.com/apps/webstore/">Peter Clark's</a> tiles. These are painted card, with cutting lines marked on the back. I'd used these tiles on my <a href="http://applestearooms.blogspot.co.uk/">Apples Tea Rooms </a> and I was very pleased with the effect. So pleased in fact that I used them again on <a href="http://smallandstately.blogspot.co.uk/">Netherton</a>. There was a batch left over that I could have added to but as I wont be at Miniatura until October when I could compare like with like, and the fact that I had already used that particular style - I wanted something different.<br />
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Inspiration presented itself during my visit to the York Fair. Floor tiles! I saw this on a build being displayed at the show. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I first started this hobby with <a href="http://hambletonhall.blogspot.co.uk/">Hambleton Hall</a> I didn't have the great roof debate over which tiles would be best (probably because I didn't know any better, I wasn't on any forums or in contact with any other miniaturists). I searched the internet and came across some self-adhesive tiles on ebay. The very thing and so many packs later, job done.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBq36V60JEIC63yvjrW8Eia9FGL7Cwr3_WkNmfL-yZOW4O7gT672eW8wj6Km_dAc6k23NP_JaHY8K_CKuQ44aqdCRoLgkmQQsMPPaRL2EPHmN_yPrOQ4sBs7RvkDJHNTC3FZL5iTIs9eE/s1600/100_0432++Roof+Close+Up.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBq36V60JEIC63yvjrW8Eia9FGL7Cwr3_WkNmfL-yZOW4O7gT672eW8wj6Km_dAc6k23NP_JaHY8K_CKuQ44aqdCRoLgkmQQsMPPaRL2EPHmN_yPrOQ4sBs7RvkDJHNTC3FZL5iTIs9eE/s320/100_0432++Roof+Close+Up.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It has since occurred to me of course that these tiles are probably floor tiles cut to size but it works!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Dilemma resolved. One pack of "slate" self-adhesive floor tiles from the DIY shop later and I'm half-way through tiling the Marsh Hall roof.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For anyone who may be considering this roofing method or who might think, like me, "I never thought of that" this is how I'm doing it. I've taken a chance by relying on the "self-adhesive" part of the tile. I did this with Hambleton Hall and unfortunately they had a habit of sliding off but this property was housed in the Conservatory and the heat didn't do the adhesive any favours. I therefore had to go over it all again and glue the tiles down. Hopefully (and I'm taking a chance) this wont happen with Marsh Hall as it's not near any heat source. I'll let you know!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Firstly, arm yourself with two dishes - one for cut tiles and one for backing paper and off-cuts (basically a mini bin); a metal rule; sharp knife (the blades will need to be replaced quite frequently); a pair of scissors and a very sharp pencil.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Take your tile </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG_m7InW4v8K5D-Fxd3W_6nK7CiSA9kbODz0Xw_pGLUe6US0UNachB5Wnslqhqz0b3IyIRqW3iN6v3qWSMVGxjVvPbFOUA99kJLjE_zDZEN9DkusCsV5YBiXHHt0rNEFhdnhz1zrZmxdo/s1600/Tile+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG_m7InW4v8K5D-Fxd3W_6nK7CiSA9kbODz0Xw_pGLUe6US0UNachB5Wnslqhqz0b3IyIRqW3iN6v3qWSMVGxjVvPbFOUA99kJLjE_zDZEN9DkusCsV5YBiXHHt0rNEFhdnhz1zrZmxdo/s320/Tile+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Mark cutting lines on the back - I measured out my tiles 1" wide by 3/4" (2.54cms x 1.09cms).<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJnKY8k2S3jtkUWLHHRqQVVsWJ0Wny5vMbZGPg5lqvzAkc2qKW4ETfbsRyhtRGMRjzoRfafsgy8eJS5nAeQHcuqhnVJGUygVvtOECY-To9_CVsgGrImuAjooETRd_eKGRBtLx0RVcnM-4/s1600/Tile+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJnKY8k2S3jtkUWLHHRqQVVsWJ0Wny5vMbZGPg5lqvzAkc2qKW4ETfbsRyhtRGMRjzoRfafsgy8eJS5nAeQHcuqhnVJGUygVvtOECY-To9_CVsgGrImuAjooETRd_eKGRBtLx0RVcnM-4/s320/Tile+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Using the very sharp knife, score/cut through the horizontal lines. I found it easier to use scissors for the vertical marks and store all the bits in your dish.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Starting at the bottom left, and with one full tile, go for it but hang on to all the little offcuts as they'll come in handy when filling in around dormer windows and the like.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In order to keep the line level I didn't pencil mark the roof (which incidentally isn't fixed yet). I just measured from the tile line I was working on to the top of the roof edge.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQy8u_PGDkSLJV0C0q13SEWTuPMN3Zur07m3mNaLemtvKYFU5lW9u5108uC7yz-UIJC6AmURdMjnHCtf7gghN2ZSvJCzEjjmPatTTgRV1XxsiWqcGamvPju-DRhjdZEkEhqhu0wtXvWFY/s1600/Tile+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQy8u_PGDkSLJV0C0q13SEWTuPMN3Zur07m3mNaLemtvKYFU5lW9u5108uC7yz-UIJC6AmURdMjnHCtf7gghN2ZSvJCzEjjmPatTTgRV1XxsiWqcGamvPju-DRhjdZEkEhqhu0wtXvWFY/s320/Tile+4.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Being self-adhesive and having a backing works out quite useful when marking up a smaller tile. Simply turn it over, mark what's required and cut with scissors.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQbfWiqBTZf4iJDxdlKOgNHVc_jO8sjjXj9DKBllDmrbrxRoq6ocUPgtaJ1lD4DnV6rQynlcLSV8E5TwYfxRYtvs4T6mQ5J11tRb7dHiENAG44ayEzhBpLIwX6TMlbOJ_Hnzk88fCPejQ/s1600/Tile+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQbfWiqBTZf4iJDxdlKOgNHVc_jO8sjjXj9DKBllDmrbrxRoq6ocUPgtaJ1lD4DnV6rQynlcLSV8E5TwYfxRYtvs4T6mQ5J11tRb7dHiENAG44ayEzhBpLIwX6TMlbOJ_Hnzk88fCPejQ/s320/Tile+3.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've tried very hard to keep all edges neat but sometimes it's not possible, especially at the dormer windows and under the eaves. This is not an issue as these edges will be covered with lead flashing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, after spending the best part of two days "up on the roof", here's my progress so far<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvY2f5aoq9v2IIZWubxSwgRJLL91ltH1ZPLrPWKWHJp4tJIOLO0TuWvqr_x3AOEv2yrC5Zatdu9WDt6O29zrnBrdhyiVcASnOgt6vvCmDFY8brBskj6LQTZb1BbOGCZTdmVHEEnkpG7H0/s1600/Tile+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="157" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvY2f5aoq9v2IIZWubxSwgRJLL91ltH1ZPLrPWKWHJp4tJIOLO0TuWvqr_x3AOEv2yrC5Zatdu9WDt6O29zrnBrdhyiVcASnOgt6vvCmDFY8brBskj6LQTZb1BbOGCZTdmVHEEnkpG7H0/s320/Tile+6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Apologies to the seasoned miniaturists who have tiled many roofs. I just thought there may be one or two newbies out there who may find the above useful (and cost effective!)</div>

I don't think I've ever faffed about with a property as much as I've faffed about with this one. I had an idea of where I was going with it then I really got into the research which threw up all sorts of different ideas, each one better/different from the last which resulted in me not being able to make up my mind!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I would go into the hobby room and move cardboard around (or at least that's what it felt like) with no progress of any note being made.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There's been a lot of "I want this but can't do it until I do that" and "if I do this, then I can't do that" and on it went.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another factor delaying the progression of this was my sister Valerie. Valerie suggested I watch <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarch_of_the_Glen_(TV_series)">Monarch of the Glen</a> which was filmed here <a href="http://www.ardverikie.com/filming.htm">Ardverikie</a>. I hadn't watched the programme when it was shown but I trusted her judgement and duly ordered the series. I have therefore been spending my time doing "research" and it has thrown up all sorts of other exterior ideas so really I'm no further forward!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here, nothing is fixed, just all propped up. Do I go with an additional oriel window?</div>

At last, at least one decision has been made and I'm stoning the walls using <a href="http://www.craft-products.com/dolls-house-brick-stone-tiles.asp">Bromley Craft Products </a> stencil and compound and I'm going with the squared off bay (I think!)</div>

Firstly, thank you to everyone who posted on this new blog. I'm really excited about this one and am full of ideas. Whether or not they happen will be anyone's guess but it's really nice to know folk are interested and keen to see what will be coming next.<br />
<br />
It's great fun shopping for minis relating to a new property when all the ideas are buzzing around (in fact it's great fun shopping for minis, period) and I wasn't disappointed with my trip to the York Fair at the weekend. I arrived in York early enough to allow myself an afternoon of RL shopping and that wasn't disappointing either - I love York!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The one thing I didn't get was the item at the very top of my list namely, panelling. Out of stock, but I should hear from the seller the minute it's readily available again. Here' are all my purchases and where I can remember, I've noted the name of the seller (the flooring in the background is for another property) - </div>

During my foray round the shops on Saturday afternoon I came across these little items from, would you believe it, an Armoury shop. This is a bonus! I am so pleased to be able to say that Marsh Hall now has a motto "By Virtue Safe" and a Coat of Arms. How swanky is that? I've no idea how they will fit into the scheme but fit they will. The little picture/carving is a magnet and the perfect size for a wall decoration.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I prefer to work with two projects. Whilst waiting on inspiration/parcels for one, I can get on with the other. I also don't want <a href="http://smallandstately.blogspot.co.uk/">Netherton</a> to be completed too soon as I am having so much fun working on it!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This new venture is a property from <a href="http://www.dollshousedirect.co.uk/">Dolls House Direct</a> - a Victorian Gothic. Not as large as Netherton but enough to keep me out of mischief for a while. I certainly have a lot of research to do with this one and I'm looking forward to that very much.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://dollshousedirect.co.uk/images/Draycott.jpg" rel="fancybox" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" src="http://dollshousedirect.co.uk/images/Draycott.jpg" style="height: 200px; width: 266.66px;" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you're wondering how I managed to arrive at the name, well..........my sister and I recently discovered a relative we had no idea we had which triggered all sorts of genealogy questions. I thought it would be quite nice to remember this individual by naming my property using his name, Marshall. I punted the idea over to sister Valerie who came up with Marsh Hall - genius! Why did I not see that myself? So, welcome to Marsh Hall.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As for the style - a lot of thought has been going into that. Given it's design I have been researching the differences between 19th century Gothic Revival (think the Palace of Westminister and Big Ben) and Scottish Baronial What were those differences? It would appear to me that the Gothic Revival style was more ecclesiastical and Scottish Baronial more domestic - being a Scot also helped swing the decision so Scottish Baronial it is. (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balmoral_Castle">Balmoral Castle</a>, <a href="http://www.blair-castle.co.uk/">Blair Atholl Castle</a> and <a href="http://www.scottsabbotsford.com/">Abbotsford</a>). All very grand but Marsh Hall will be more Abbotsford than Balmoral!</div>

Another building influencing my decision on where to go with this is <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauriston_Castle">Lauriston Castle</a>, a much smaller domestic property in Edinburgh (and just a 15 minute drive from my home) which has some lovely exterior features I would like to include.</div>

There's not a lot to see by way of any progress other than the beginnings of the build and an undercoat of paint. I decided to do away with the staircases and at the moment I'm playing with walls.</div>
